This is beyond epic. A journey to the far reaches of our world. To one of the most historic competitions known to humankind.  Experience the Mongolian people, their culture and one of the world's most epic landscapes as we traverse this little known country. 

In 2011, Mongolian eagle hunting was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as an example of ‘living human heritage’.  We'll get in the middle of this ancient spectacle by traveling to the far reaches of Asia for the Mongolian Golden Eagle Festival. 

For centuries, Kazakh eagle hunters have trained golden eagles for hunting. Once a year, they hold a spectacular competition in the Altai Mountains, showcasing their horsemanship and falconry skills. It’s a destination that most people will only dream of, but we are going to crush it, EPX style.  We’ll rendezvous in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, to raise a glass of airag (Google it) at a rooftop bar overlooking the city. Seoul Street is where the party happens every night- we’ll dance in the streets with the locals as DJs as musicians share the music that makes Mongolians move.  

“Great Place of Complete Joy”. Who doesn’t want to go somewhere with that name?  The Gandantegchinlen Monastery is one of the few that survived Stalin’s destruction and slaughter in the 1930s. Today, it’s revived as the center of Tantric Buddhism, home to hundreds of monks who live among richly decorated temples and priceless works of art. We’ll get spiritual with the monks in this revered temple, and then catch the highlights of the city of Ulaanbaatar.  

Day two, we’ll take an expedition to Terelj National Park, where we’ll ride on horseback to visit local nomads. Our trail will take us through ancient rock formations, along mountain streams to the phenomenal Ariyabal Meditation Temple. To reach this otherworldly temple, we must cross the Bridge of Heaven, climbing to the mountaintop plateau for an incredible view of the valley below.  

On Day 3, we’re going in- flying to Ulgii, the center of Kazakh culture. We’ll spend the night in a camp with a family of eagle hunters, celebrating around a fire as the sun sets on the Altai Mountains.  

For the next two days, we’ll immerse ourselves in the spectacle that is The Golden Eagle Festival. A feast for the eyes and the spirit, we will see the Kazakhs compete, displaying their prowess with horses and eagles. At night, we will feast at the awards dinner, celebrating as our favorite hunters receive their traditional crowns. 

We will spend the night again in a yurt, alongside a family of eagle hunters.
